SIS’s Secondary department runs two curricula: The Cambridge secondary (Checkpoint and IGCSE) and the JHS. The department has been adequately designed and resourced to ensure that learners enjoy a learning experience that aims to promote critical thinking, innovativeness, creativity, problem-solving, leadership and effective communication. With its safe environment, learners are exposed to a wide range of subjects that aim to promote global citizenship and total being.
Although the school runs a mainstream system, the department prides itself with running interventions for learners with identified Special Education Needs (SEN). The school offers Cambridge Primary alongside their national curriculum, or as part of a bilingual program. The school’s secondary department runs two curricula:
Junior High School (Basic Education Certificate Examination)
The Basic Education Certificate Examination is the main examination to qualify students for admission into secondary schools in Ghana and Nigeria. It is administered under the Ghana Education Service under the Ministry of Education, Ghana.
The Cambridge IGCSE
The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) was created over 30 years ago, giving international qualification to learners. The IGCSE program is an international program offered globally in over 160 countries. The program combines various subjects from different facets of the academic spectrum with the aim of ensuring that the learner at SIS is holistically developed to be globally competitive citizen. Learners are expected to undertake community service and internships within the course of their study in Shield International School.
The subjects offered are carefully selected and taught
differentially to ensure that learners are not only prepared for examination but to
stand out as responsible learners. Starting from a foundation of core subjects, it is easy to add breadth and cross-curricular perspectives.
Encouraging learners to engage with a variety of subjects, and make connections between them, is fundamental to our approach.
With a flexible framework aimed at developing skills and have a firm foundation in First Language English,
Mathematics and Science, the subjects are delivered with an integrated and differentiated approach that
allows learners to be actively involved in the learning process. Checkpoint Tests are offered to assess
learners at the end of the Cambridge Lower Secondary.
For schools, Cambridge IGCSE offers a flexible and stimulating curriculum, supported with excellent
resources and training. For learners, Cambridge IGCSE helps improve performance by developing skills
in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. It is the perfect springboard to advanced study.
